Frequently asked Questions

This is, simply, a list of common questions that many of our visitors ask us. If you have a question that isn't here, just e-mail your question to us.

A release from must be filled out the first time you climb at Extreme Edge.

I've never climbed before so has Extreme Edge any climbs for beginners and what else do I need to know?

Allow approximately 2 hours for your first time climbing. There is a short belay/orientation/safety lesson on your first visit. In this lesson we will teach you the safety aspects of climbing and belaying at the gym. Please bring a partner to climb/belay with. On occasion we have singles come to the gym looking for partners but do not count on it. We have over 200 climbs ranging from 8.5 to 14.5 metres high, built for every level of ability.

What is belaying?

Belaying is the art of holding the other end of the rope while the climber climbs. The belayer is the person on the ground who controls the rope for the climber and lowers them when they are ready to come back down to the ground.

What should I wear to climb?

Wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move. Dress according to the outside temperature as the environment inside the gym is not climate controlled and will vary only a few degrees from the outside temperature. Running shoes are fine, although you can rent proper climbing shoes from us.

Are there age requirements to climb at Extreme Edge?

Yes and no, Extreme Edge has climbing for all ages of climbers from about 3 years onwards, but we require that all belayers (the person who holds the rope to keep the climber safe) be at least 12.

What if I don't own any climbing equipment?

Not a problem, we have everything you need available for rent, including harnesses, shoes, and chalk bags.

Will there be staff members on hand to belay if I come in by myself?

Not usually. We have a large bouldering area for customers who come in by themselves. Also, it usually is not too hard to find other people in the gym to climb with. Alternatively, browse the Climbzone section of this website for our fully automatic belay climbs.

Is climbing a good workout?
Climbing is one of the best workouts around! You will build strength and flexibility while burning calories. You are pulling and pushing your own body weight, making strength gains natural and healthy. And it’s easy to stay motivated because it's so much fun!

What types of payment do you accept at Extreme Edge?

We accept cash, cheques, Visa, Mastercard and Bartercard.

If we come for the day can we leave to eat and come back?

Sure, Extreme Edge’s entrances are based on a day pass, just let the staff know on your way out that you plan to come back that day.

Is there a place to eat inside if you bring a  picnic lunch?

Yes, we have plenty of tables and chairs inside the gym, feel free to bring refreshments and snacks.

Can I use my own belay device, rather than the gym's Gri-Gris on the top rope climbs?

No, we require that you use our Gri-Gris to belay. You will get instructed on how to use them safely, by our staff.

May I use my own rope for lead routes?

Yes, or we can provide you with one once you have been checked by a staff member as to your ability to safely lead climb and belay.
